Alamance County offers scenic trails, peaceful nature spots and rich local history along the way.  The trail network provides opportunities for hiking, exploring and enjoying the outdoors.  It is a perfect destination for those seeking natural beauty, recreation and a refreshing adventure. Below are some of Nolan's insights on enjoying the Shallow Ford Natural Area.

It's time to unplug and enjoy the great outdoors.

Most over looked area to recreate?

The campsites by the river are perfect for paddle-camping. There is a boat rack right at the take out to store your boat for the night.

What’s your favorite season to recreate in NC and why?

My favorite is Fall because of the cooler temperatures and leaves changing.

What level of experience is needed to recreate in this area?

Little experience is needed to visit Shallow Ford Natural Area. There are easy and moderate trails here that can be
suitable for most ages. Paddling on the stretch of the river here is beginner-friendly. During the summer, the water level  is lower and may make getting over rocks more difficult.

How long should you plan on visiting the area?

1 day on the river, 1 night at the campsites, 1 day on the river. This can easily be stretched into a weekend trip.

What sets the area apart from other destinations?

Shallow Ford has a number of different trails on the property. What is unique is that each one has it's own ecology and features.
There is a reason that is one of Alamance County's most visited parks along the Haw River. There are beautiful views of small rapids and wildlife.

What is unique about the facilities and infrastructure of the area?

There is a rock outcropping at the paddle access that provides a great spot for fishing. The campsites are a short walk
from the take-out and have plenty of space for multiple tents. Every time that I've camped here, I've heard owls nearby while sitting around the campfire.

How do you plan ahead and prepare for your recreational activity?

Check the current river levels and look at the upcoming forecast.

What piece of outdoor equipment is your must have?

A good dry bag and comfortable seat in your boat.

How do you put one Outdoor NC Leave No Trace principle in action before/during/or after your activity?

I pack out anything I take with me including my gear and food wrappers/containers.

Favorite place to visit before or after an outdoor adventure for a meal/coffee/or another beverage?

This park isn't far from the Town of Elon. I'd recommend stopping at Pandora's Pies to get some lunch and ice cream afterwards!

Share a unique place to stay in the area.

The Glencoe Mill District is not far from here and has a number of Airbnb options.

Other overlooked and under visited locations in the area to see while in town?

This park is in a rural part of Alamance County. There are other nearby river parks nearby such as Great Bend River Park and Glencoe Paddle Access which offer hiking and views of the Glencoe Mill Dam.

What is your ‘can’t miss experience’ in the area?

You can't miss stopping somewhere to sit by the Haw River and just be still. It is so peaceful.

Insider tip!

If you decide to paddle a few miles south and camp at Great Bend Park, book site #1. It sits up on a hill and overlooks the great
"bend" in the river and the views are stunning!
