Declaration Stories

Declaration Stories, a weekly series of essays on different copies of the Declaration of Independence, running from July 2025 through the 250th anniversary in July 2026. This series is created by Dr. Sneff, an early American historian, consulting curator, and leading expert on the Declaration of Independence.

April 21, 2026 - Long Suspected

On a ship in New York Harbor, a British clerk copied the Declaration of Independence by hand. British Vice Admiral Molyneux Shuldham enclosed this manuscript in a letter to John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich and First Lord of the Admiralty.
