Best known for his representational paintings of reflections--especially of windows, Stickel expresses “he loves how each, often through mystery, tells its own story-inside-as well as outside the window. His goal and passion is to paint an image on a 2-dimensional surface making it look as 3-dimensional as possible. I was honored to learn that friends, on separate occasions, used images of mine as "focal points" during their labor and delivery!” Stickel draws his inspiration for his compositions from his “beloved North Carolina” as well as two years in Africa, trips to China, Europe and throughout the U.S. (Colorado as well as the mid-west) where he has lived or traveled. However, he agrees with Andrew Wyeth, who once commented “that there was enough subject matter in his own backyard to paint over several lifetimes.”
