For our June Open Meeting of the Alamance Makers Guild we are helping the City of Burlington celebrate its 125th Anniversary with a special talk about the history of Innovation, Invention, Entrepreneurship, and Makers in Burlington. Our special guest speaker this month is Burlington native, businessman, and local historian Holt Skinner. Holt has been fascinated with the history of Burlington and Alamance County since an early age starting with connections to his own family history. He will be talking about the people, businesses, inventions, and happenings that made Burlington "Bigger Better Burlington" and helped it grow through a century long booming textiles economy and the changes and transition into the new STEM economy we are settling into today. Holt's talk will cover big businesses like Glen Raven, Lab Corp, and Carolina Biological and also local inventors and entrepreneurs all the way through today's Maker Movement helping to bring back jobs and support STEM Education. Holt tells a positive story that will make you proud to be a resident of Burlington and hopeful for our future together. Also on the Agenda for June: * Show-N-Tell (Bring YOUR Projects and news!) Make sure to bring your cool projects for show-n-tell... this is one of the best parts of our meetings but we need YOU to show off! * Membership Drive: Become a dues paying member of the Alamance Makers Guild and help support the expenses of Maker Faire and enable us to do more cool community projects! * News and Updates * Call for Volunteers * Updates on Future Events * Reports from our Interest Groups As always, AMG Open Meetings are free, fun, and family friendly. We are open to anyone including teens and accompanied older children. Please share our events (we grow by word of mouth) Since July 2014 Burlington NC is proud to be a #MakerCity and home to a growing Maker Ecosystem featuring the Alamance Makers Guild, the STEAM Junction Makerspace, Maker Faire Burlington, and a growing network of individuals, businesses, new industry, organizations (Elon University, Alamance Community College, Alamance County Public Libraries), and Schools working together to enable new creative and high-tech jobs, improve STEM Education, and build community.
